Pennsic!

Wow, was that just the most amazing Pennsic EVER or what?

Thank you to everyone to came out to the shows and played with us around the campfires... oh, and for putting up with our shenanigans after we were delirious from dancing (and tequila) late in the evening/ morn. And thank you for not suing us over any random turfing or wrasslin’ you were subjected to with or without your consent.

I loved seeing so many of our Pittsburgh friends out around the campfires and performing to live music on the Performing arts stage. Thanks to you, our community here in the 'burgh is growing and gaining notoriety. It’s very exciting, and what is even more exciting is that we have lots of great Pennsic friends coming here to teach and perform in the next few months. Here are some shows that I know off the top of my head, please post if you know any others:

Ishtar will be at YIV on August 31, and will play again in October AND November.

Wine and Alchemy will be playing at YIV on Thurs Sept 25th (I’m 85% certain that is the date). They are amazingly talented and play Eastern European and Greek gypsy music. I was lucky to jam with them till morning at the end of Pennsic. Thanks guys, what a treat!

If you had the luck to see Onca and August from the Mezmer Society at Pennsic, then you know what a force of nature these two artists are. August’s diverse repertoire of songs is a never-ending bag of tricks. And Onca’s luscious baritone voice and sassy dance will have you mesmerized. They will be coming to Pittsburgh to teach and perform Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 29 &30). YES! Workshops will include dance, performance approaches, singing and accordion workshops, and of course we will have a show and jam sessions galore. We will post more info, soon, but save the date now.

Raquy and the Caveman will be coming to YIV in November.

I can't believe how great the music was this year at Pennsic! The music was stellar and the dancing was inspired and fun. I feel like I came away a different dancer, picking up bits and pieces from our friends from different tribes. Thanks so much for a lovely and inspired experience.

Henna (and other) artists needed

A friend of mine from Spiritways CUUPS of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills is organizing an event on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

They are in need of a henna artist to do henna application and/or teach a workshop. You would pay for a table and then keep all profits.

The event is called "Spiritfest 2008--a celebration of wellness, healing and spirituality featuring healers, psychic readings, tarot, handmade items and much more"

There may also be a need for jewelry artists, soap/incense/candle/etc. makers, handmade clothing/accessories, etc.--Anything that may fit into the theme mentioned above. There may be opportunities to teach a workshop also. (No pay for the workshops, but it can be an opportunity for networking/marketing.)

If anyone is interested, PM me for contact information, table fees, etc.

My friend Mandee(jazz singer extroidinare) was kind enough to take this man in and he stole from her, any advice conserns or words about this much appreciated...
here's her post:
This man took my car, computer, and trust....
Category: Life

Last week my husband and I allowed a young man to stay with us. I met
him in NYC, he was very sweet and charming. He was well educated and I
was sooooo naive. He said his name was Jorge (or George )DeCastro
Garcia, and he was a pilot with IFL , a company which supposedly
worked for the UN. He said he had the weekend of the 4th of July off,
and I invited him to Pittsburgh to see my show, emceeing for the
Bellydance is Beautiful show. He flew in, stayed 4 days in my home and
left , with our Saturn SL1 2002 lisence plate FRP3900 , the Macbook
Pro, the harddrive, a Canon A 530 camera, our ipod and my trust. If
you see him, let the authorities and me know, don't approach him,
don't put yourself in danger, and don't trust him. Zone 3 Police is in
charge of the investigation :412-488-8326

Too see a photo of him:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd213/phatmandee/IMG_9942-Version2...

Please, Tommy and I are still very sad over this, thankfully we have
good insurance, what we don't have is the harddrive with all of our
memories, so if you have any photos or video of us over the last few
years, if it occurs to you to send it on over, that is what is really
hurting. The stuff is just stuff, we are with Sate Farm , Lynn in
Darla Zeli's office is so supportive, I am typing to you now on her
laptop, a loaner from her til we get a replacement.....

His email is ...@gmail.com> , I don't think you can use
an email to track down a person, but my friends are smart.....

Seriously, I don't think he is dangerous, but you don't know what he's
mixed up in, so don't approach, just be aware...he said he wanted to
go Burning Man this year, so if you see him, beware, land pirate,
beware!!!!!

Costume making supplies in Pittsburgh?

I am looking for costuming supplies, with a focus on cabaret - fabric, trim, all the good stuff.

I know JoAnn, Michaels, Parker Button and the possibilities of finding things at Goodwill - but, being an East End chick, I am wondering whether there are places I should check out? Where are the great fabric stores I can't live without?

Synopsis: Guided by the accounts of such female travelers as Lady Montagu, Julia Pardoe, and Lucy Garnett, all of whom lived in Ottoman lands for significant periods of time, this beautifully illustrated book explores—and hopes to overturn—the 19th-century stereotypes of Ottoman women. Both Eastern and Western accounts of Turkish society during that time made much of the harem, with Muslim writers describing Turkish women as exotic, indolent, and depraved, while Europeans usually described them as noble and elegant. Then, with the advent of the first women's movement in the West, the harem began to be criticized as an institution that trapped women and enforced their submission to men. All of these ideas were refuted by Montagu, Pardoe, and Garnett, who argued that Ottoman women were perhaps the freest in the world; this book backs up that claim with historical research showing that women frequently prevailed in cases against their husbands and other male relatives in the Ottoman courts.

Soul Kiss is blend of goods all finely chosen or made by my own design in various places around the world. If you find me at a Festival, this is what you will see:

Soul Kiss Silver - Many of my peices are antique. Much of the very rare and authentically old peices of silver from India are gone, However I am still able to bring incredably rare and old peices to my customers. Many of the peices i get are old sterling silver wedding peices from women in Rhajastan which i find and re-string them into a clevor design of necklaces which are adjustable. Becuase they are adjustable they are like three neck's in one becuase they can be worn as a high choker or many different lengths. When worn as a choker the strands hang down the back. Soul Kiss also carries very unique stones, an awesome eclectic array of earings and rings.
Mid priced jewerly - Also very unique designs. Much of of it is made of natural elements such as wood, bamboo and stones. All with a very exotic feel.

Clothing - All my own designs. Mostly street wear with a tribal edge. Great all natural japenese style shirts for women, with hand painted wood beaded tyes. Beautiful skirts with panels of very old hand embroidered fabrics the northern Indian gypsy tribes. Lots of Men's too which is rare at Fest's because there are never any great choices for guys!! All made with beautiful natural fabrics. sexy.

Beautiful Statues and hand carved masks - All carved out of exotic woods such as mango wood and jackfruit wood etc. All of my carvings i have made in very small villages in the high mountains of Bali. I support many many families and artisans in those villages.

Accesories - I carry many various Sacred art scarves from India, I have yummy pashimina's that make great elegant shawls for a light weight but warm cover up for the summer. And great prices too !! Soul Kiss carries alot of antique wedding sari's that are gorgous.
For the Bellydancers - Depending on the Festival, you will always find great stuf for the Bellydancers. Some of the Fest's more so, depending on which one, but e-mail me and i will let you know which ones. I will always carry exotic adormnents tho that are not readily seen at most or all fest's !! So please visit me soon

PRE-NATAL BELLY DANCE

Sunday, May 18th 10:30-11:30 am

Belly dance has been used for centuries to prepare a woman for childbirth. This dance honors the
pregnant body and the baby inside. The movements are fluid and sensual. They are a great
preparation for managing labor.

The class will begin with a pre-natal appropriate yoga-based warm-up. We will stretch and strengthen
the muscles you need to perform this art. We will then learn some basic moves which we will
transform into a small combination. Class will end with a cool down. Students should come prepared
with clothing in which they can move comfortably, such as Yoga attire, a Yoga mat for the warm up
period, and a hip scarf for fun.

Class is held at Yoga Matrika, an intimate studio in Squirrel Hill. You can use your class card or pay
$15 to drop-in for this class. New students pay $5 for their first class. Pre-registration is not required,
but suggested: call Sharon to inquire or reserve a space (412) 855-5692.

Instructor Bio
Deena Blumenfeld began Belly Dancing more than 6 years ago. Deena's dance style is Tribal Fusion.
Tribal fusion combines, Egyptian, Turkish, North African and Indian Gypsy dances for a more modern
take on classic Belly Dance. Deena will complete her yoga instructor certification in December 2008
and is currently a pre-natal yoga instructor apprentice at Yoga Matrika. She is also mom to Owen,
who just turned 3.

4/27: Art All Night and Bellydance Sundays - come watch good ol' bellydance!

Boy, this is THE weekend for bellydance in Pittsburgh - hope everybody has a chance to enjoy the wide variety of talent we have in this city! We're saving the best for last ;-) We will do *two* (free!!!) bellydance shows on Sunday, I hope you will come out and support the local dance community! (I hope I can go watch Sadiqa on Saturday, check 'em out.) Anyways, here's what's happening on Sunday, 4/27:

1. Three Rivers Bellydance will dance at Art All Night
(http://www.artallnight.com), 11:45AM-12:30PM

This performance will feature Nesheli, Janim and the very talented Mamie, three Pittsburgh dancers who have been studying with Mirjana for several years now. It's gonna be a fun show, with quite a bit of variety, including zills, veil, cane, tray, as well as a wide spectrum of styles, from more folkloric over Egyptian and American cabaret to Turkish gyspy. This is going to be a great opportunity to enjoy traditional bellydance performances.

2. Bellydance Sundays with Janim and Nesheli at Your Inner Vagabond (http://www.youinnervagabond.com), 7PM

For those who already have other commitments on Sunday morning, Jamin and Nesheli (i.e., me) will dance up a storm Sunday evening at 7PM, at Your Inner Vagabond's Bellydance Sundays. The performance will be followed by an open dance floor, and there is always lots of good music. So, bring your hip scarves!

And, we will mix it up (different costumes, different music, different use of props), so if you have the time to attend both shows, you won't be bored ;-) And, an extra hometown bonus: Neither of these performances overlaps with the Penguins game.

4/26: Tribal Style Bellydance workshop

Introduction to Tribal Style Bellydance with Nesheli (your truly)

When: Saturday, April 26, 1PM-3:15PM
Where: Your Inner Vagabond, 4130 Bulter Street - Lawrenceville
How much: $20 prereg/$25 at the door

Learn to bellydance, tribal style: This workshop will introduce American Tribal Style Bellydance (ATS). Invented and made famous by Fat Chance Belly Dance in San Francisco, ATS is danced in groups, relying on group improvisation. The movements are earthy, with a folkloric feel, and the continuous interaction between the dancers creates a dynamic, joyful atmosphere.

To teach the basics of ATS, this workshop will comprise two parts: First, it introduce the movements used in ATS. Then, students will learn how to use these movements to dance with others through exercises that focus on cueing transitions between moves.

This workshop is not just for dancers who are interested in group improvisation: those who are interested in the various tribal fusion styles will learn about the roots of their dance; ATS is the foundation of tribal fusion. Dancers who prefer oriental-style bellydance will become more comfortable with improvisation, which is an important skill for soloists.

The instructor is the founder of Pittsburgh's first and only ATS troupe, Tribe Taksim!

Preregistration is $20 through www.yourinnervagabond.com, $25 at the door.

Just a friendly reminder that Ishtar will be playing a 40-50 minute set this Friday night April 11 at Your Inner Vagabond. (4130 Butler St, Pittsburgh PA 15201) Doors are 7:30 and show is at 8PM. All ages, BYOB and a $10 cover. Under 14 years, $5.

We are trying to raise money to record and press a CD. Our studio dates are April 26 and 27. Yes...Ishtar is going to the studio. :-)

FUNDRAISER ALERT!!!!

We are sharing the stage with Between Liberties and Agnes Wired For Sound. Between Liberties is progressive acoustic eclectic rock. (Yeah, quite a bit of adjectives there.) Agnes is Pittsburgh's most excellent industrial band with Chad Hammit as the cooollleest front man ever.

PhatManDee will be EmCeeing the evening and sitting in on a song or two with Ishtar.

All three of our bands are recording this year, so we have combined forces to bring a diverse and eclectic group of performers and audience members together for one fun filled night at Your Inner Vagabond.

In addition to 3 great musical acts and one Phabulous MC, I will be bellydancing -- costume and all to an Agnes Wired For Sound song. Many of you know of my love for industrial music. :-)
www.myspace.com/betweenliberties
www.myspace.com/ishtarmiddleeast

Here comes the best part: FREE STUFF!

Get a free Ishtar shirt *or* our 5 song demo EP of Radio Babylon. Only at the SHOW on Friday April 11 and only while supplies last.

More shirts will be forthcoming...we are screening them ourselves.

ATS is not usually taught in Pittsburgh, this series is a new and unique opportunity to learn about group improvisation, following the Fat Chance Bellydance format. Pittsburgh audiences have enjoyed ATS in performances by Tribe Taksim, the ATS troupe I lead. The first workshop will introduce a shared vocabulary of fast moves, and principles how these moves are used in group improv. The focus will be on interactive exercises to develop skills for improvising, communicating through body language and leading others - we will DANCE!

Registration for one 2-hour workshop is $20 in advance, and $25 at the door. To preregister, please goto http://www.yourinnervagabond.com and follow the sign-up link in the calendar.

Future workshops (on the last Saturday of every month at 1PM) will cover slow moves, dancing with zills, and more complex combinations.

Taxeem (April 12, 2008 - 9:45 to 11:45am):
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.

Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves. Through a series of technical drills and improvised combos students will engage in such topics as dynamic phrasing, musicality, personal expression and the art of creating your own combos.

The Art of Professional Performance (April 13, 2008 - 12:00 to 2:00pm):
This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds. After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

Don't forget......Sterling Painton will start off the April 12th event with Yoga Stretches for Belly Dancers from 8:30 to 9:30. Also, we will have an on-site buffet lunch for $5. And lastly......Mira Betz and Sadiqa (formerly PurpleMatilda) will perform at Zafira Dance Company's Speakeasy Cabaret Evening Show on April 12th. For more info and tickets: www.zafiradance.com

Your Inner Vagabond Grand Opening Tonight!

Hello all - the grand opening of Your Inner Vagabond is tonight!!!

I am just back from Lawrenceville. The Inner Vagabond's Grand Opening event is well under way (big trays of baklava being put out!), and performances will start at 7PM tonight.

For those who are worried about the weather: At 4PM, the roads were surprisingly useable in the East End. Because everybody was really cautious, and rush hour traffic was backed up on main roads, but nothing serious.

See you tonight - there will lots of fun performances, and lots of belly dancers, too ;-)

Hey folks,

I will have limited access to my computer over the next couple weeks to do event updates on the community website. I won't have internet service at my new house until April. If you have anything that needs to be listed right away (regardless of when the event will take place)........please let me know ASAP. Otherwise, I can't guarantee that it will be listed.

Thanks!
Kari

Only 3 more weeks for the Early Bird Registration for Mira's workshops in Pittsburgh, PA.
Register today!! yogaandbellydance.com/schedul...pay.html
